Who can carry out Emergency Light Testing?

The owner or responsible person within the premises is responsible for ensuring their emergency light testing procedure in respect to the building’s emergency lighting system are properly carried out to ensure compliance under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and BS 5266.

Emergency Light Testing Regulations

Emergency lighting installation is shown in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 Order (FSO), in particular Regulation 14 (maintenance emergency exits and routes). Emergency lighting systems should be inspected / tested at regular intervals. It is recommended for lighting checks to be performed on a monthly or annual basis.

What is the process?

All emergency lighting systems should be tested monthly. This is a short functional test in accordance with BS 5266–1:2016. The duration of the test should be sufficient to ensure that the luminaire operates correctly, whilst minimising any damage to the system components, e.g. Lamps, Battery

Annual Lighting Tests

The annual test should be a full rated duration test to ensure that the emergency lights are fully functional and producing the acceptable level of light and light for the full durations as per BS 5266-1:2016. This test must be carried out by a competent person.

Monthly tests can be carried out by the responsible person or nominated employee. Full duration emergency lighting testing should be carried out by a competent person as per BS5266-part1:2016. Full duration emergency lighting tests entail checking that the light facility is activated safely in emergency mode and remains on for the duration of the battery unit, usually this will be 3 hours. After the light has been tested, the luminaire will be returned to the standby mode.

Once testing is complete, we issue a certificate and report which will incorporate any malfunctions or recommendations of remedial work required.
